Art Night 2019

Art Night was London’s largest free contemporary art festival. Each year the festival partnered with a leading cultural institution, focusing on a different area of London to explore its distinctive identity, culture and architecture through various forms of art.

Art Night 2019 took place in Walthamstow and King’s Cross in venues where people are brought together in everyday life – the market, cinema, pub, community centre, library, shopping mall, museum, car park, school, places of worship and the street.

As Head of Design, I was responsible for the overall branding and production of digital and print assets. Based on the brief from our artistic director which referenced themes of Love, Hope and the Future — as well as rave culture of the 90s, the Hacienda and the boy band East 17 — I referenced 90s rave posters, zines and rave graphics for the design and utilised a phases of the moon motif and a bold long shade effect on the title lock-up. For the palette, I used contrasting colours and gradients to evoke the transition from late evening to sunrise, as the festival ran all night.

KEY WORDS:

  • Rave Culture / 90s
